The future is public transport
We need to give everyone access to public transport if we’re going to stop the climate crisis
Every person living in an urban area should have access to safe, frequent, affordable and accessible public transport within a 10 minute walk from their home.
Public transport connects us – to our loved ones, our communities, our jobs and our cities. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, public transport systems and workers have kept our cities moving for the millions of essential workers and city residents who rely on services every day.
But public transport is facing its own crisis: falling ridership has exacerbated already huge funding gaps.
The COVID-19 crisis has made it clear that we need urgent investments in public transport to deliver safe, reliable and affordable services for the millions of residents living in our cities.
Workers, mayors, union leaders and city residents across the globe are standing together to call on world leaders to make the transformative investments we need to drive a green and just economic recovery, create millions of jobs and confront the climate crisis.
What does this mean for you?
Public transport is at the heart of cities around the world – helping people get to and from work, connecting families, all while providing jobs and supporting livelihoods. Yet falling passenger numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to financial crises for public transport systems that are already facing neglect from governments. It is time to take urgent action to invest in public transport globally, to ensure that:
- Green public transport creates decent work and powers the fight against the climate crisis
- Affordable ticket prices allow lower income workers to access transportation
- Reliable schedules provide quality, accessible services for workers and passengers
- Women passengers and transport workers are provided with a safe environment free from violence and harassment
- Cities around the world meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement
- Vulnerable communities can move freely throughout our cities
Together, we will build a brighter, more sustainable and more financially secure future for everyone, everywhere.
